sticky clutch on the F 20

I push in the clutch, put it in gear and let the clutch out. The tractor will shake three times and then start to move. My foot is off the pedal before it starts to move. I can start out in fourth gear, and I drove it up a hill without the clutch slipping. What is your guess as to what is wrong?
Thank you
Steve

Worn out clutch or out of adjustment (needs 1 to 1.5: of free play in pedal to pedal rest). Either way it is glazed or covered in decomposing oil/grease. If it is not adjusted correctly, change the adjustment then wear it in by using the tractor with a load behind it to see if it will mellow out. If not it will need a new clutch. Jim

In addition to what Jim posted, pull the inspection plate and see if mouse has setup shop in there. It also could be rust on the clutch shaft, which is preventing the disc from sliding freely. Could also be a nest clogging up the works.

Pull the inspection cover and take a good look up inside.

I did not see any mouse nest. I am not sure what to do. I guess doing something, is better than doing nothing. Maybe I will try to lube the shaft a little.
Thank you

Don't overdo it, just a little lube to see if it free's up. also, it is not a huge job to pull the clutch on an F-20. take the coupler off, and then pull the clutch cover/housing. You can then get a good idea of what may or may not be going on.

I replaced a clutch and disc in a regular in about 2 hours total. Out and back in. Biggest issue was taking my time to get the clutch bolts out without twisting them off.

I changed the adjustment by quite a bit to get the pedal free play to about an inch and a quarter. Someone has welded a piece of metal behind the lever, that is attached to the shaft coming out of the clutch housing, which extends the hole for the rod, down about another 3/4 of an inch than the original lever. That might make the free play adjustment, need to be different than what the book calls out for. I cleaned as much rust off the pressure plate and the clutch as I could before assembling them. I am hoping that I just need to wear the glazing off both surfaces, but I still am not sure what is causing this problem.
I love how easy this tractor starts, and I really like using it, but I know it is not working right yet.
Thank you
Steve

I think I am going to drive the tractor for a while, and while it is moving, I will push the clutch in and let it out, until I am bored silly for my leg gives out. Labor Day weekend, there is a tractor pull about 10 miles from here. If I get the clutch working correctly i might take her to it, just for my amusement.
Thank you
Steve

The clutch on an F20 is not adjusted by Free Play. This is not a letter series tractor. The petal should be firmly held to the transmission stop by the return spring attached to the rod. Then you open the inspection cover and adjust the clearance between the throwout bearing and the clutch with the throwout bearing pushed back in contact with the fork. The adjustments are done with the rod and the clearance, not free play. This should also compensate for the extension someone welded on to make the clutch easier to push. All the necessary dimensions for your clutch are in this chart. Specifically dimension C.
