Are the screws that hold the field winding to the housing left handed thread?

No but its sure easier if you have the tool made for them

No. I usually take them out with an impact driver. I clamp the housing in a vise to support the sides to keep it from warping the housing.

Also, the new screws are Phillips head and much better to remove and install with impact driver.

At the local mom n pop genny starter repair shop the crusty old dude always takes a big hammer and raps the starter case near where those big screws are prior to removing them and here at home I like an impact driver in those situations
