350 Distributor Help

I have been working on a 350 here lately and I am having some problems with the distributor. When I fired up the tractor the advance would go to full advance. I took the distributor apart and found the advance springs were bad. I ordered a set of springs from IH that were supposed to fit this distributor. That would be a Type "O" according to the master tune up guide. When I fire it up it is still advanced about 10 degrees from TDC. When I rev it, the advance goes to 22 degrees. I don't think I have the correct springs. The new springs are not applying any tension to weights when the engine is not running and I don't think that is right. I looked on the distributor flange for a letter code and all I could find was this number stamped on the flange: D7-987322. I have not been able to find any IH part numbers that are even remotely similar to this. Can anyone help me with this?

22 degrees is correct for 1957 regular fuel it could be taken to 25 for today's 87octane regular. The springs can be shortened and re bent to hook (one coil at a time) so it has a more progressive advance. At 1700 or so it should be full advance.

What is the springs part number you got? Should be the letter S before the D7. 350 used a S symbol distributor. If I remember correct the original springs for that unit was no longer available the last time I checked.
May be able to tell you the advance rate of the springs you have if I know the number. Think they quit using a O symbol unit during 300 production.

I would have to go digging to see just how the advance comes in on those and at what RPM . BUT maybe your engine is idling way to fast . When they are set correctly ya can darn near count the fan blade . And to get a Dist. set correctly it needs set up on a dist . machine by and OLD FART that knows how to do the timing curve. and there ain't many of us left.

The advance springs for my H came from Summit Racing. They have a kit for small block Chevys that contains 3 sets of springs. It is a bit of fiddling around, but once it is right, you never have to change it. I think I used the middle set (silver ?).

The part number for the springs is: 362725R91. According to the master tune up guide this is the same sprinng set for all gas 350 from what I see. The idle is down just about to a stall. I was having trouble with my timing light giving me reliable numbers. I am sure I was in the 500 rpm range.

That's the spring set for a O symbol distributor and a LP distributor. Engine speed needs to be 400 RPM or lower to use a timing light for TDC or 0 advance. Should have about 8 degrees advance at 800 RPM.
Depending on if its a utility or a row crop IH changed springs a few times from start to end of 300 and 350 production gasoline tractors. Set you have is about all you can get for them the last I checked and there is not a hole lot of difference in the advance rates.
