OT, I'm 8n guy, but question on IH Cub hydr. fluid type

Have a collection of old Ford tractors and work on them all the time. However, I just got an IH 1978 Cub running and the only thing that does not work properly is the hydraulic lift.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Did not work all day yesterday as I ran the tractor. HOWEVER, this morning it is working fine. I have come to the conclusion the oil is too thin and works well when the oil is thick before it gets hot. I used the factory recommended Hy-Tran fluid from Tractor Supply.

QUESTION - I am using Hy-Tran hydraulic/tran. fluid and would like to use something heavier (thicker) to see if that works, What grade or type of oil do you all recommend????

You have always been very helpful with my Ford questions and hope you can assist on this one.

Thanks. David

Clean the screen and becareful removing the filler plug as it mite be air locked. When the filler cap is off cycle the lift to remove any air that could be trapped move the lever several times that jusst mite be the problem

Mobilfluid 424 Might be a good product to consider. THis buy its self, or mixed should be higher in viscosity. Or higher in viscosity stability. Jim

Thanks. But where is the screen located? The manual I have does not show it on diagrams and I am new to Cubs.

Thanks again. David

The screen/filter is inside the touch control assembly. The only way to get to it is to remove the cap from the unit. Depending on the amount of use and the way the previous owners took care of the tractor, it may be pretty fragile.

i can almost garentee the problem is that screen, most cub owners today dont know its there, and its kind of a pia to get to, its best to just pull the unit off the tractor so you can get at it, when i bought by '48 cub 4 years ago it was from the original owner, son,th ehydraulic unit was very eratic, and would hunt up and down about 6 inches, not ideal for mowing grass, i ordered a kit to rebuild it when i pulled the end cap off there was the screen, completly stopped up, guess th eoriginal owners didnt know it was there either, after i cleaned it and went ahead and put allthe kit in the hydraulic unit being as i was already into it anyway, its worked fine ever since , before you buy a kit, clean that screen, it will nost likly cure it of what ails it
