Double Split Advice

I need to do a double split on my 544 gear drive utility to get the TA out. I don't have concrete to work on. Any advice other than don't do it? I've done a single split on it before successfully. If I decide I can't handle the double split I'll have it done at a local shop but I'd like to explore DIY possibilites first.

Block it up, Split the engine like normal. Set it in something you can move, then go back for the other part...

I would use a front end loader and roll the front half of tractor out of way. then use front end loader to remove ta housing. make sure rear of tractor is blocked solidly. not all the comforts of a garage but when determined things can be done.

That's what I've done before with single splits. My concern is with alignment when reassembling: that was a PITA even with a single split. I've split an 8N in my shop: the concrete floor made it easy. There isn't room in there for the 544, though.

Create dowel rods to use for alignment. It probably will be a bear no matter what you do, cause of the uneven ground your working with. But with determination, it can happen.

Yes, I've got a set for the front split but I'll need another set for the back. Thanks.

Heh. What worries me is the expensive things that can happen with too much determination.

I double split my 300 twice on concrete, I moved the engine half out of the way and then used an old photocopier cart on casters to set the TA housing on and slide it away from the rear end. I would think you could put down a sheet of 3/4" plywood under the tractor and use that to roll the TA housing on if you have any kind of shop crane or 4 wheel dolly or other roll-around thing that will hold it.

I split two 400s on a gravel floor in a pole barn. One at time though. It can be done, if you take the time to think it through.

(quoted from post at 19:00:07 08/17/13) It's a utility: the wheels don't adjust. Width is not the problem, though. My shop is pretty small (and cluttered).

I think I would clean and then revisit my options.

The shop is cluttered with a lathe, saws, drill presses, and benches which I need to make stuff that I sell. However, even if I cleared it out the shop floor is not long enough to do a double split and keep everything on the concrete (or inside).

I helped my brother split his Ford 841 outside, we used 2x6 boards to roll back half on. It was challenging but doable. If I were in your shoes I'd look at 3/4" plywood as a work surface.
