Farmall M not wanting to start sometimes

Maybe someone has some idea"s. My 1948 Farmall M first time starts right up, just lately after it has run for a little and shut it down, I try to re-start it with the starter it just turns over and won"t start. If I try to pull start it in a couple feet it will fire right up. also after sitting for a while ( half hour or hour ??) it will start with the starter. one other thing it does....when going down a steep hill using the engine to hold me back, it blows out white smoke , a long hill on the road , a lot of white smoke (not crazy bad though) never smokes under a load or uses oil.

Your battery voltage may be dropping too low for your distributor. When you pull start it you're not using your starter and your battery voltage doesn't drop. In regard to the white smoke are you losing any coolant? Hal

A weak battery (just a little weak will do it) or high resistance cables (corroded at terminals or internally) poor ground or hot connections a starter switch that is getting hot when used, are all possible causes (maybe some of the baove together) cables on a 6v M should be 00gauge. Smaller wires will not roll it over with enough voltage left in the ignition to fire it. To see if this is the case, jump the coil with another 6v battery (supplying Negative to the coil and ground from the jumping ignition battery)with the ignition switch off, and roll the starter. if it starts, you know it is low voltage at the coil. A new battery with less CCA than required will cause that issue directly. See comments above.
THe smoke is probably from valve guide wear. Look in the archives to find comments on Umbrella seals and Perfect circle style valve seals. They can be done sometimes with out pulling the head. I bet it also gives some smoke at idle and when first reved from idle. High vacuum condition pulls oil through the guides. These never had seals from the factory. But deserve them now. Jim
