Farmall C Voltage Regulator

I have a farmall c that I can not get the genny and Vr to charge went through all the test on here. I am wondering if I have the right VR. It is new. The system is setup for positive ground. When I ched the regulator on the underneath side it is stamped 6 volt positive so do I have the right VR the system is 6 volt and positive ground. I am getting frustrated because I have done a lot of tests and had the generator tested and they say it works. I am hoping it is the wrong VR.

If youre wired 6 volts POS ground then YES a 6 volt Pos Grnd Class A VR is correct if youre configured for a VR and its wired right and well grounded and the genny is polarized.....

If you use a jumper wire to dead ground the gennys FLD post and she charges then but NOT otherwise, the VR is bad or the VR isnt well grounded (insure that) or the wires bad/open from FLD on Genny to FLD on the VR.

My para 5 tells how to see if non charging is the fault of the Genny or the VR.

Was the Genny polarized

Did you work through my procedure

Burnsg2003-- This may help. this information was given to me by Teddy52food. Trouble shooting the voltage regulator.

Leave it on the tractor and take the cover off. You will see 2 sets of points. One should be open (leave it alone) One should be closed. Clean that one with very fine sandpaper, 600 grit, and then with a dollar bill. If those points are badly burnt, your trouble may be in the generator field coils.

Start the engine and the open set of points should close and the ampmeter should show a charge when it is running half throttle. If the charge is low, put a little pressure with your finger in the set you just cleaned. It should show more charge. (have your wife watch the meter). Bend the tab that the spring hooks to in order to put more pressure on those points. It should show around 8 to 10 amps.

This info has worked twice for me. I copied it and laminated it and keep it on my workbench.

That just mite be the problem does your gen have three brushes . And is the reg on top of the gen or on a bracket below the gen as they do take different regs. There is a Delco Remy# on the back of the gen and you need the correct reg for that gen. There are two regs listed for that series and you do need to have the correct one or you have a problem. Simple test with engine running ground the field on the gen if that shows charge the reg is at fault. If it doesent charge the gen is bad. Does your lite sw have hi charge position. And does the sw have four positions. All componets need to have a good ground all the way to the lite sw.

"Simple test with engine running ground the field on the gen if that shows charge the reg is at fault."

Just to add a bit to that, Id say "if that shows charge the reg is at fault OR ELSE THE REG ISNT WELL GROUNDED (which can be the problem and not allow a charge EVEN IF REG IS FINE) OR ELSE THE WIRE IS BAD FROM FLD ON GENNY TO FLD ON VR"

Fun chat

What battery ya got? 8 volt will require the regulator to be "adjusted" to charge at the right voltage.. Or it will not charge til battery is discharged.. Been thru that one..

If its a 6 volt battery, then john t's schematic will tell you.

Last but not least... Does the gauge work properly? Lights on showing discharge with tractor off??

If you follow John T's procedure, which I always use troubleshooting electrical systems, and find that the new voltage regulator is not working right, I would ask where you got the new VR. I bought one (make that two) Chinese built VR and neither one worked right. Ended up throwing them away and spending more for a US made VR the works perfect.

6V voltage regulators are mostly junk.

When I replaced the VR on my SC it would not charge. Bad words were said. Then I noticed that I had not reconnected the field wire to the generator.

You might have a bad VR, but it won't hurt to check the wiring.

Do you have a fresh paint job?? If so and the regulator is mounted on the new paint, the paint will insulate the base from ground. The regulator base must have a good ground for the regulator to work properly.
