color on 300 u

When I got my 300 u it had an automotive-style gas cap. I recently bought the correct cap at an auction, but it needs to be repainted. It's red on the top layer, but when I ground off the old paint, it was black down about 6 layers al the way to the metal.

Was the gas cap originally red or black?

If it was the correct replacement cap from the recall/free cap program (it should be as it is the safe to use cap) it was black from the program. That cap should have two vent holes in the top. All other non original caps might have black primer, but I am fairly sure the original caps (Tall or not) were not black under the red. Jim

Here's a link to get the gas cap Janicholson spoke of. It's free so it would be worth the effort. Click on the link below and it will bring up the request form.

Thanks for the info. I can see from t he page you linked to that I have the replacement cap, since it has the two vent holes and the warning message, and it's supposed to be black.

Mine still has the original cap and it is/was just unpainted metal, maybe galvanized. It has a ding in it where it was left on the hood and got hit by a Bushhog blade. I found it and gave it back to my uncle who was bushhogging pasture at the time. The loader was on(u-34)and he could not see he left the cap on the hood when he fueled up.I was about 5yrs old and came out for a ride on his lap. I am 1yr younger than the tractor. Mark
