hey I have a 1949 farmall h with original engine and all equipment I want to change the engine and put a larger engine in the farmall h, just wondering what is the largest engine I can get in it will a 400 or 450 engine fit or a super m engine will it fit thanks for your help

Any engine you can afford. Seriously, with enough money you can
put anything in an H. My buddy dropped a 289 ford motor in one.
I've seen 350 chevy v8's installed.

The M,SM,400,450 engine family will not bolt in easily.

The IH SH,300,350 will bolt right in with no modifications. An engine
out of a IH 460 will bolt in with some mods to the frame rails
steering etc. Thats about the limit of what I've seen and researched.

It's easy to over power an H drivetrain. You start running out of
traction. Then you add bigger tires and weights to get
aforementioned traction.

That's when things start to break.

A 300 or 350 engine with 175 CI is the largest direct bolt-in engine
that I am aware of. You would be better off maybe to buy a 300 or
350 and sell the H, since they have other handy abilities. M-450
engines are too wide for the H frame.

Buy a 400 or 450. It will be cheaper and easier in the long run.
You will also have a useable tractor that isn't all cobbled
together.
