Checking Oil on M

The engine oil is checked with petcocks. These are small valves that are located in the oil pan. These valves are opened (sometimes with a wrench) very gently to see if oil is at the level of the valve. The top valve is full, the bottom valve is used for the one quart low level. That lower valve is also used to allow the draining of contaminated engine oil once a day when a farmer used tractor fuel (distillate). The distillate would dilute the oil such that putting one fresh quart in the tractor was necessary every day. Not used now with only gasoline being used.
If oil drips out the top valve all is well. if not add oil at the big winged cover at the front of the engine on the distributor side.
The belly pump is filled to the mark on the dipstick located under the bakers hat cap under the right side gas tank. If the dipstick is missing (many are) it is either dropped into the pump (no issue) or lost to the outside by accident. If none the level is good at 7 to 8 inches down from the top of the fill pipe. I'm following you up until the belly pump. I found the valves today. Top one is intact, but the bottom one is broken off. And, I know where the winged cap is to fill oil. I'm not sure what you are referring to as "bakers hat cap". Found what I saw that might be a dipstick tube I will need to take the sheet metal off to check. Also, not sure if you are saying there are two places that need to be checked or alternative ways to check oil? I appreciated the help.

The bakers cap thing is a fist full of cast iron with pipe threads on the bottom that fit the stand pipe that is also used to fill the reservoir. It is maybe 2 inches tall and has finger grips around the outside. Google images--Liftall fill cap, and the first image is it.
it is located where there is no meed to remove sheet metal, it is on the top of the cas frame above where the right output elbo is located.
It could have a pipe cap on it, but it should have the original Chef Hat style. The level of oil is measured from the top of the stand tube threads to the oil (coat hanger in the hole to measure 7 inches will do). Jim
