Since this is an IH forum I'm going to assume that you are asking about the differences between the TA (partial powershift) and the forward and reverse (shuttle) option.

The TA uses a planetary gear set to give a slower speed option when the clutch holding it in direct drive is released. The tractor continues to move in the same direction.

The forward and reverse option also uses a planetary gear set but uses a shift collar to select either forward or reverse direction of travel.

There are differences in both the TA and F/R option depending on the tractor model but the principle remains the same.

This is on the tractordata website for the transmissions offered in the Case IH 885 model.

I just cannot grasp what it means from a standpoint of, there I am wanting to shift up or down while the tractor is in motion.

partial powershift: Synchronized 4-speed with high, low, and reverse ranges and electric-hydraulic powershift between direct and low drive.

shuttle: Synchronized 4-speed with high, low, and reverse ranges and forward-reverse powershift shuttle lever.

The 885 still uses the same basic principles. In this case the options are a four speed transmission with reverse and a partial power shift which is an electric/hydraulic shifted TA. That gives you two speed in every gear.

The other option is the same basic four speed transmission without reverse and a hydraulically shifted forward and reverse unit where the TA would be located.

The second option has only half the gear speed options but has the ability to be shifted between forward and reverse without using the clutch. It is a great option for a loader or other uses where you would need to switch between forward and reverse.

a shuttle shift is nice if you are doing loader work. i have an old minne moline loader backhoe with a shuttle shift. the main transmission has the typical 1st thu 5th(road gear) and reverse. it has a second lever that is a shuttle shift. select any gear in the main transmission, and by operating the shuttle shift the tractor will move foreward and reverse in that selected gear. the minne is slightly faster backing up in any foreward gear with the shuttle.

We have several Oliver 1xxx tractors equipped with both shuttle (Reverse-O-Tork) and partial powershift (2 or 3 speed Hydrapower.) They operate like this:

Shuttle: You select any of 6 gears from the main transmission, then step on the pedal for the direction you want to go (FWD or REV). The harder you push the pedal, the faster the tractor goes. To change direction you simply let up the pedal and step on the other one. No braking or clutching is required - in fact there is no clutch pedal.

The shuttle transmission is ideally suited for loader work, snow moving, etc. - any task with frequent changes in direction.

Partial power shift: This is a 2 or 3 speed hydraulically-shifted planetary transmission interposed between the clutch and the main transmission. It can be shifted up/down under full load without clutching.

PPS is useful for heavy field work like plowing. When you encounter a hard spot you can gear down simply by shifting the Hydrapower lever. When thru the hard spot you then smoothly gear back up again without stopping.
