674 IH 540 Shaft

The 540 shaft is broken and I need to replace it.Can any one till me how ? Do I take the cover off under the seat to get to the back of the shaft ? is there a snap ring in there I need to take off ? Ant pitchers out there I can look at that would help me . Ive never done this before but need to . summers comming to an end and I havent got my hay in yet help please .

You have to take off the hydraulic lift cover on top so that you can get at the snap ring that holds the output gear (which won't fit through the hole in the back). The 1000 rpm shaft comes right out the back after you disconnect it from the PTO clutch through the side PTO hole, but the 540 is unfortunately more complicated and needs the top removed. Probably a good idea to get a manual (at least an I&T manual if not an IH one) before digging around in there so you know what to expect.

My I&T shop manual indicates that after draining the hydraulic oil, the 3pt hydraulic housing has to be removed to access the snap ring(s) on the 540 PTO shaft BUT other people seem to indicate that the snap ring(s) can be accessed by removing the hydraulic cover under the seat.

Maybe someone that has changed a 540 PTO shaft will answer.

I can't help you on how but I do have 2 IH 674 parts tractors if you can't find your parts locally.
