Super C clutch grinding

Aaron in NH

My '55 Super C is getting tough to get into gear when the engine is running. There is a pretty bad grinding noise before it slips into gear. However, once it is in gear, or if I start it in gear, it can be slipped ino any other gear with the engine running quite easily. Any ideas what I need to fix?

Hi Aaron, probably the pilot bushing in the flywheel. This is a bronze bushing and there is no method to lube it and eventually it becomes dry of lube and when you push in the clutch the clutch releases but the transmission shaft continues to turn because it does not spin freely in the pilot bushing. Requires splitting tractor at clutch housing to replace pilot bushing.

Check the oil level in the tranny. If it is too low the gears spin too easy. Are you getting the petal all the way down?

Never seen a C/Super C that didn't grind a lil when ya first go into gear...nature of the beast unless it gets real bad. Keep your RPMs down when shifting.

as stated keep rpms low. try shifting into one of the higher gears, first (maybe 3rd) then shift into the one of your choosing.

Thanks guys. I have ordered a clutch kit (figuring might as well replace all not just the bearing) but splitting the tractor might have to wait until winter. It the meantime, adjusting the clutch adjustment rod about 1/2" seems to have made it a little better. Thanks for the advice.
