300 u oil filter

I have a 300 utility I bought last year in running condition. I have about 30 hours on it since then. I found antifreeze in the oil last week, so I'm replacing the head gasket.

There was no filter in there when I opened the canister! I got a new oil filter at the local NAPA store and I'll be jimmied if I can find the replacement gasket. The filter is about half the height of the canister and there is literally nothing to hold it in place, except good thoughts and magic. I did see a ridge on the inlet, and thought maybe that force fits down into the inlet and clips into place or something, but that would be stupid. And of course the manuals I bought last year have run away from home.

Do I have the wrong filter? Is there supposed to be a spring or fitting to hold the filter down into the inlet? What keeps the oil from leaking out the top of the canister? Who has the right filter is napa is selling me the wrong one?

Gas.
Looking at the diagram, I have absolutely the wrong filter, and am missing both a bottom gasket and what looks like a crush washer on top.

Thank you, this helps.

I have gotten the correct filter from napa before, but have went back ih/case. (Napa closed) Napa should be able to cross the to the correct filter with Bob"s info. As far as coolant in your oil, I think your liner packing rings may be leaking. Before you drain coolant and pull the head, pull the oil pan and look up at the bottom of the liners where they protrude down thru the block and see if coolant is seeping down. If they are leaking you need an overhaul. Mark

The Wixs filter number is 51172, and NAPA would be 1172. I'm thinking that the gasket comes with the Wixs filter.

Too late for that, I've already got the head reinstalled. If it still leaks then I will have to go the overhaul route. Do I have to pull the engine to do one, or can I do it on the tractor? It looks like I can, but I hate to get to the "oh no, I did this wrong" with the engine disassembled.

Even better. I think my local Carquest shop carries Wixs filters. Thanks!

Both the NAPA 1172 and WIX 51172 should come with the gasket. If you desire an additional gasket, it's NAPA 5070 or WIX 15070. A sufficient substitute for the crush washer on top of the canister should be able to be sourced at a decent auto parts store as well. Bring your bolt, or some measurements.

Every Carquest I've been to carry WIX filters.

The 300 engine is a dry sleeve engine. The only way that you would get any dripping antifreeze off the bottom of the sleeves is if the block is cracked in behind the sleeve.

You can pull the sleeves without splittins. The o-rings are probably leaking. You need to remove the pan and look at which sleeve is the culprit. It it mite take a couple of days but you will see coolant leaking at the bottom of the sleeve if thats the trouble spot.

Well, yesterday I had a frozen choke on my '51 Plymouth. I fixed it, but needed to make a gasket for the carb, and as long as I was in, I wanted to change the air filter oil and the plugs. And one of the plug wires was bad. The first car parts store I went to (O'Reilly's) didn't have: gasket paper, 10 wt oil, a cut-to-length sparkplug wire kit, or plugs for a '51 Plymouth. So not all car parts stores are decent.

I would say that if you went to an O'Reily store, you didn't go to a ("decent") parts store at all, you went to a joke inside a building disguised as an auto parts store. It may be different elsewhere, but O'Reily, Auto Zone, Advance, and the like around here are not worth stepping into, unless you want something incredibly simple (wiper blades, vanity plates, turtle wax, etc.) or common parts (brakes, water pump, etc.) for something made in the last decade. The NAPA, Carquest, Auto Value, Pronto, Federated, and AC Delco stores around here are "decent" auto parts stores.

I picked up the filter from Carquest today, had the right filter and the gasket. And the clerk even knew what a crush washer was and had one in stock.

The number has changed from 51172 to 85172
