Try Magnet Therapy?

Bought a VERY used Farmall 460 RC a year ago. Seems to have metal filings/shavings in the hyd oil. I have drained, flushed with a bit of diesel, cleaned screen and replaced filter. Considering putting a magnet in through the rear housing drain plug. Worth a try? Other ideas? Thanks!

Would it work to put it in the filter cavity? No chance of getting it in the gears. They do make magnetic drain plugs too. Try google.

Not in the differential, it will have a good chance of getting cought in the gears. Putting a flat flexible rubber based magnet in there would be OK. The filter housing is Good as well, but woild not catch material gravitating to the bottom of major cavities. Jim

Yes. You want your magnet to protrude out into the oil. Just throw it in there and, if it doesn"t get caught in the gears, it will just end up stuck flat against the wall of the cavity with most of the flux in the cast iron. Also, with the magnet on a drain plug you can remove and clean it.

They have flat magnets in old road ranger transmissions that would work. They are about a 1/4 inch thick. They used to set in shallow pockets in the bottom of the case.

The new "rare earth magnets" are incredibly strong compared to regular old magnets. I wonder if you could even stick it to the outside of the drain plug and still pull stuff out.

I see two issues with this, aside from the magnet getting stuck between some gears as you drop it in:

1. If the metal filings/particles are stuck to the magnet you can't flush them out.
2. If you're getting THAT many metal filings, seems to me something is very very wrong with your tractor. Might want to check into that and get it fixed before something major goes wrong.

Thanks to all for ideas. I've pretty much nailed down the source, which I believe to be the T.A. ("out" on the low side). Pretty much scared off from trying a magnet due to replies on this forum. kelly in TX
