Farmall C Front Wheel Slop

The tractor has a narrow front. There is quite a bit of play between the inner wheel bearing and the hub. I couldn"t see anything wrong with the bearing. I tightened the axle nut as tight as I could against the outside bearing. I guess the hub is worn? I can"t see how the bearing could be worn? Any suggestions for taking up the slack? I guess it will probably last a long time the way it is.

C. Amick, I have never worked on one but either the bearing race or the bearing is very worn sounds like to me..

Possibly a washer could be installed between outer bearing and castle nut. Maybe the spindle is out of threads.

Tapered roller bearings cannot be run with "as much as I could" preload. Tyhey will be toast in short order. If loose after tightening, there is a bearing out. Running it will destroy the spindle and thus the lower bolster. Not good!!. Take it apart and find the real issue. It should have preload as follows. With the other tire on a 4X4 to lift the wheel that is loose, replace bearings and seals as needed. Pack the bearings with wheel bearing grease. Assemble. Tighten the spindle nut till the wheel just starts to feel some drag as it is turned by hand. Whack the casting of the wheel with a wooden 2X4 to seat the bearings. Check the spin again if loose retighten the nut till it will only spin on its own about one turn after a good hand spin. Loosen the nut one castle and pin it there. Jim

There is no simple fix for this other than a total rebuild of the bearing assembly. If you have never completed this task I suggest you get some help. Any good mechanic can pack a wheel bearing.

I already did everything you mentioned except banging the wheel with a 4x4. I cleaned and inspected the bearings and repacked them with grease. It's possible that the outside bearing didn't get fully seated when I tightened down the nut. The wheel looks like it is in far enough, but wobbles up and down on the inside bearing when you shake the wheel. It was loose when I took it off. Do you know the correct bearing number for the inside bearing, perhaps it's not the correct bearing?

Can you get the bearing off the spindle? Does it match the cup? Maybe put a washer behind it. Is the spindle grooved in under the bearing>

THERE IS INNER GREASE SEAL,WITH RING LOCK INSIDE SEAL. INNER RACE,THEN BEARING,THEN SEAL DRIVEN FROM BACKSIDE FLUSH,PACK,INSERT OUTER BEARING,WASHER,NUT,KEY. SHOULD BE PERFECT FIT, IF NOT, WHEEL HAS BEEN RUN WITH RACE SPINNING INSIDE WHEEL, AND WORN COMPLETE HUB. MAY HAVE TO REPLACE WHEEL ONLY.

I just did a Super A with the same problem. It had about 1/4 inch play when the bearings were loaded. Long story short, the bearing just showed a little ware but that was the problem. I replaced both bearings and the seal and everything was right then. So I would say replace the bearings and you should be good. I bought a bearing and seal kit right here on this site.
