3588 2+2 clunks when backing up

My father-in-law has a 3588 that makes a sharp clunking noise under the seat when backing up. He expected it was the 4 wheel drive shaft that is under the left hand side of the cab. When I drove it I found out that the noise is only when backing up, clutch in or out, and in reverse. if the tractor is free rolling, with the clutch depressed, and the shift lever is slid into neutral, the noise stops. I say that there is a tooth missing on the reverse gear. Anyone have any ideas? Am I looking at a double spit, and getting into the tranny on this beast?

Probably a tooth out of the gear parking pawl engages which is also used in reverse. Not a double split to repair, however the entire rear end has to come apart as that lower shaft is the last thing to come out of that rear housing. You can take the front wheel drive gear box off and verify the problem. I have known a few tractors to run a long time with a cog out of that gear. Not necessarily a 2+2 but same gear. If you find filings in filter or looseness of that lower shaft, that would indicate bearing failure on the lower shaft and then you would have to repair it.
