OT mounting a winch to a trailer

Only slightly OT since I rarely haul anything that doesn't have an IH logo on it somewhere! I want to use my Warn winch on my 18' car hauler. I have the winch on a mount that slides into a 2" receiver. Would like to add a receiver to the trailer tongue so that I can use the winch with the trailer on the truck. Been looking around the net and not finding a receiver made for this purpose. Anyone know of one or have a clever homemade version they would share? Thanks!

You might be able to find a used hitch in the classifieds or on craigslist, just cut apart and weld back together, if you have the ability, or go to a weld shop or metal supplier for a piece of square tube steel the same size as your reciever and get as creative as you want, again if you have the welding ability.
Just what I would do in your position.

Thanks Adrian. I emailed Fawteen today and asked him how his worked out. The post with pictures was in the archives still. I may modify it slightly and use the variation for mine. It's a two year old trailer so I'll let a pro weld it for me.

Thanks Charlie, that's the sort of thing I was looking for. The ones that came up on my search were all attached to brackets and I want to make my own. Thinking I'll get a hold of one of those and then sketch it out and run it by a welder. Appreciate the help!

Dave H, Swing by the closet car wrecking yard and get a receiver hitch set-up off of most any American Full size Pickup and simply devise a mount to slide your winch into for use! Cut, Fabricate, what-ever is needed it would seem to me. If the truck had burned then you will get the Hitch for nest to nothing, since it will only be stressed when it is winching something up on your trailer. My thoughts!

Any good trailer shop should have the weldable receiver tube all predrilled and ready for your application right on the shelf.

Heck, if you're desperate you can even get them at Harbor Freight.

another option would be a
dual receiver hitch insert for your truck,
so you could use your winch with/without the trailer if needed

Here are pics of how I added a receiver hitch for the winch on these two trailers.

That looks like it would fit mine too. Headed out to find some hardware today then take it to the weld shop and have them tack it together for me. Going to look something like that.

Actually thought about that, but decided to go with the trailer mount. Someone around here is going to end up putting the trailer ball in the wrong receiver and making a wreck of things...not mentioning any names, but...

I'm thinking for the price I'll just go new. There IS a harbor freight on my rounds today, and TSC of course. I'll look at em. Appreciate it!
