1974 IH 574 Gas new owner

Hey all, I just bought a 1974 IH 574 gas with 3100 hours. The previous owner went over with a fine tooth comb and replaced a few parts along with the hydraulic pump. I have been doing some research about this tractor. I mainly want to do some brush hog work on my 30 acres.
I have a few questions:

First is the hydraulic tell-lite turns on intermittently. Sometimes in reverse, other times in 3 low. It may stay on for a few minutes then shut off. I know the fluid levels are fine, but with the previous owner replacing the pump, I will changed the filter and replace with Case Hy-tran fluid. all controls work fine along with the PTO, but the light is still disturbing. Any other thoughts?

Second is the diff lock pedal is stuck in the down position. The tractor however is not running with the diff locked as the wheels spin at two different speeds. I have sprayed all connections with PB blaster and will wait a few days to fire up and hope the pedal disengages. I am worried as to why the tractor is not running with the diff locked even with the pedal depressed down.

Last is the PB warning light comes on for a few seconds when i engage the PTO (normal??). The light however does not turn on with the PB is engaged (weird?) the PB does work however.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I think the two tellites are in the wrong sockets in the dash, as on my 574 the transmission one will come on for a few seconds when the pto is engaged. The diff lock pedal, that could be some stripped lnkage, as with it engaged, you can"t steer the tractor, it"ll just push straight ahead. Someone here will have some better ideas about it, I never had one apart internally.

Hi Barlow,
Re diff lock, continue to work on mechanism to see
if you can free it up. My brother's 684 diff lock
no longer works either. You can put the pedal down
but it does not lock the axles. I think he has
sheared the internal dowel pin(s) that lock the
axles in the diff. See caseih.com parts for foot
pedal mech:

Re PB lite coming on with PTO, I think you have a
electrical wiring issue, short, bad PB switch etc.
The PB switch is under the PB lever and supplies a
ground to the circuit to turn on the light in the
dash. The PTO lever mechanism runs under the back
of the seat and activates a spool valve on top of
the MCV just behind left foot rest. There is also
one electrical connector behind the seat and under
the deck plate that supplies all the connections
to the rear of tractor. Also there is only one or
two ground points and one is close to the the
electrical connector and is on one of the bolts
that holds the deck plate on. Very good thing is
PB works so fix that light so no one will drive
tractor with PB on. Later models replaced PB light
with a flashing light.

Re transmission lube light coming on: This is
activated by a mushroom like sensor that is under
the seat with a single wire on it. It really has
very little to do with the hydraulic pump but
sense the pressure in the transmission lube line
that is fed by the return hydraulic oil cooler
line and the transmission lube pump. Just make
sure transmission is over full by 5 gallons or so.
This light sometimes comes on when transmission is
hot and engine at low idle and sometimes when
engaging PTO. Have had the sensor go bad as well
were light was on all the time. Not much to worry
about unless it is on all the time.

As other post said are you positive that you all
looking at correct lights as light coming on when
PTO first engaged would appear to me as
transmission lube light. Light coming on in 3rd or
rev could be caused by gear shift lever shorting
PB switch wire to ground.

Thank you all for you input and advise. I am now feeling better that the issues may be with electrical wiring or shorts and not mechanical. I am positive the PB light comes on for a few seconds when I engage the PTO and not the hydraulic tell-lite.

Once I free the diff pedal I will see if I need to adjust the linkage to see if it will engage. If not then it sounds like an internal issue.

I will let you know of how I make out in a few days.

I guess one more questions would be in adjusting the linkage on the diff, is there a set distance I should be adjusting the nut to for proper engagement or is this just a plug and play issue?

I do have a manual for the tractor, but could not find these specs.

P.S. I would love to share some pics but this site will not let me. I think I must first donate some $?

Thanks again

Since the oil lines to the PS runs through the cover over the pressure switch for these they may have rubbed a bare spot in the insulation. The wiring runs right near the PTO valve so it could have rubbed a bare spot in the harness there also. These are what I would look at first. It will be difficult to see in behind the MCV and all the things in by the PTO valve though. There is a boot that goes over the PTO valve that helps to keep the dirt out is probably shot by now also. There is a grease fitting on the PB lever up in there too.

Thanks for the info. I just noticed something ( but haven't looked into it) when gear lever in in 1st the light is on. The lever has a little play in it so when the lever if forced back the light goes off move it forward a 1/2 in. The light goes on. Im not sure if the light is supposed to be on then a short causes it to go off or vice versa.
