With the points open and your ignition switch in the on position use a volt meter and see if there's battery voltage to your coil. Check your points to make sure they're set at .020". Use a piece of 320 or 400 wet or dry and rub those points. If they're pitted replace them. Hal
 
have you an electric meter (multi meter)? quickest way to test. turn on ignition switch, you should have voltage to and through the coil.

bought a small tractor, had engine running for about 30 secs., motor died, bad coil wire.
