m wont shut off unless idling?

I have a 46 m that was converted to 12 volt when I bought it with a toggle switch on/off and a push button to start it. The problem is it wont shut off unless its right down on idle any suggestions on what it could be?

I think you need a diode between the alternator and the battery. I am not real sure so I will watch and see what the real experts think.

If you have an alternator, you do need a diode between alternator and battery, there is a great wiring diagram in archives done by Bob M for 12 volt conversion using alternator. without the diode it will back feed and stay running

Assuming it is a 10SI alternator or Hitachi, Wired as a three wire setup, not a one wire setup.
A 10 ohm resitor, a side marker light bulb, or a 3amp diode with the band end toward the alternator will fix it. It is in series with the wire going to the #1 small terminal on the alternator, connected to the ignition switch, or coil wire going to the ignition switch (possibly hooked to a ballast resistor at the coil). it is a three wire, a buddy of mine told me his grandfather always puts a light on his tractors when he converts them to 12 volt, so that's probally why.also I don't have a resistor on the coil it is 12v but should I? thanks

I think this diagram compliments of Farmall Bob will help you. You need the light or diode in the drawing.

The diode goes into the wire before the "1" terminal on the alternator, with the line on the diode towards the alternator.

There are a lot of electrical solutions to your problem but you really should let it idle for awhile before you shut it off anyhow, depending on how hard you were working it.
