stuck muffler...help

My "new-to-me" 340 is now in the shed so let the fun begin!! As I have shot WD40 on just about every nut, connector, pivot point, etc....to get the hood off to get at the engine, I am stumped by the muffler. After all of the years of work and then the years of sitting around, the muffler is securely attached to the pipe coming out of the manifold. The flanged bottom of the muffler and clamp literally fell off.

My question to those of you who have done this, what is the best method of getting the muffler off of the manifold pipe? Saws all? Angle grinder? Cut it off vertically or horizontally? Thank you!!

I think a sharp chisel will get it come loose, or relief it enough to drive it off with a 2x4 and a hammer from the bottom.

Well #1 WD40 is water dismantlement formulate 40. It is not a oil to make thing easy to move etc it is for removing water nothing more nothing less. Use something like ATF or PB blaster but ATF will work better fast

I wouldn"t sworry too much about saving the pipe, you"re probably gonna find it"s rusted too far anyway. You want to save the manifold, don"t crack that. I"d just sawzall away the muffler, then PB Blast the pipe - to - muffler joint, and get thatout without damage.

If you have a muffler cut-off wheel, just grind the "slits" up past the manifold pipe. You can then get a small chisel or screw driver in to start working/expanding the muffler portion. PB blaster or similar. They will come off, but it is not a 5 minute job. You can also cut some additional slits at 90 degrees to the existing ones.

It will come off and you won't break the manifold. If you have acetylene torches, bring the muffler pipe to cherry a couple of times, and wiggle it while still cherry is another way to get it loose.

You said, "the flanged bottom of the muffler and clamp literally fell off."

To me, that means that there is no muffler below the main body. Is that correct?

If so, I would bet that a couple of good smacks with your hand, to the body of the muffler will be enough to jar it loose. Otherwise cut the muffler apart with your favorite cutting tool. I assume you don't intend to save it.

I would saw it off at the base of the thick part as who knows just how bad its rusted fast. You have a hard to find tractor will be great when running again just arent that many to be found.

Lose that can of WD-40 and get a can of "rust penetrating solvent" Or 50-50 ATF and Acetone.
