QUESTION for the real H or M GURUS..

None of the oil that passes through the filter goes to any part of the engine until it again passes through the oil pump. It al all returned directly to the reservoir.

The base of the H and M oil filters is attached to the block where there is a passage from the oil galley to the bottom of the hole where the canister attaching bolt is in. That bolt is hollow with a small hole in the side near the center of the filter. That allows oil to enter the inside of the filter to flow through to the outside filtering the oil. After the oil has been through the filter it goes back down through the filter base where the passage is aligned with the 1/8 inch pipe drain tube in the block returning the oil to the pan.

I believe your original question had something to do about a glass filter using a mason jar. That set up is on the air cleaner (donaldson) and uses a mason jar as a precleaner. amazing amount of dust collects there before the air gets to the oil bath for clean air.

The glass jar on the air filter works like a Dyson vacuum cleaner. Swirling the air around causes the heavier dirt particles sling to the outside, hit the wall of the jar, loose momentum, and settle to the bottom.

Dyson has been marketing it like it's something new and revolutionary. That "technology" has been spinning 1/64 scale John Deere tractors around since the 1940's.

If you mean a legitimate oil filter, that's a new one on me.

I have heard of oil filters using rolls of TOILET PAPER as a filter media in the past... Maybe you just jammed a roll of toilet paper into the jar?

yes indeed. I always figured that five to ten percent of the oil got filtered and the lower the oil pressure the less that got pushed through that tiny hole in the bolt that holds the canister on. this system is called the Purolator system. ih started using this system around '29 on it's tractors and power units.

Learn something new everyday. I had no idea that little oil passed through the filter on those tractors.

So once the oil filter is dirty the oil in the pan is REALLY dirty.

The bypass filter was also used on the 6 cyl motor truck engine that the 4 and 560 engine is based off. I remember installing a new short block in I believe a A-160 truck and it came with a NEW full flow filter kit. It was not installed in the exact same position as the 560 as there was not room or something and it used a hose coming out of the block right from the oil pump. It was not long before IH developed a one piece base and hose was eliminated. Hey, we went through the dry air filter business with that truck also. Found the design was inadequate and co. retrofitted it back to oil bath. Was a few more years that motor truck went back to dry air filters again. The 560 had a good filter and relief valve system but poor oil drain back feature. IH redesigned the base yet again, used those poorly designed fiber wafers to regulate pressure, bypass and drain back so troubles with oil pressure started all over again. Oh the joys of progress.

I've cleaned my oil pan out twice since 73 and it was pretty dirty both times. The 1st time I stuck my finger thru the drain hole and pulled out a gob of dirt and oil! My grandpa bought the H new in 52 and I've had it since 73. The engine is amazing and never been apart.
Edit; I removed the pan both times

Gary Baker in Michigan can make it a full flow system if you want it. Our pulling engine is set up like a new system. Works great.
