IH 674 Engine clutch backplate and the PTO shaft

I'm having trouble with my hydraulics and PTO on my 674. The main drive shaft that runs everything (hydraulic pump and PTO) is free wheeling. It sounds like from what I have read that the back clutch plate runs the PTO shaft. Anyone have experience with this? Does this require replacing the main clutch?

The pto drive is through a splined coupling on the rear of the clutch pressure plate!! Sometimes the mating pto drive shaft or this coupler can wear badly with loss of drive.

Hi Rod,
remove the inspection plate on bottom of clutch housing and check for metal bits. It is difficult to see much as the clutch release bearing is in the way. The clutch release bearing can be moved rearward by removing the pin in the clevis connected to the clutch foot pedal. The PTO shaft is the outer shaft and it goes into splines in the clutch pressure plate. The splines on the pressure plate or the splines on the PTO shaft can wear out and strip giving metal bits in bottom of clutch housing.

Also check to see that the rivets that hold the spline hub to the cover are not sheared off.

Thanks everyone for your help. I removed the inspection cover of the bell housing and was able to see that the rivets were badly twisted and that the back clutch plate is broken out just above the rivets.
So, I guess I will be splitting the old girl and replacing some clutch parts. I will tear it apart and see how things look, but will most likely replace everything while its opened up..... Thanks again for your knowledge.
