1975 Cub Clutch will not engage..?????

Have been working on a 1975 IH Cub which had been parked for almost 10 years. Finally got the motor running.

However, tried to drive it today and could not shift it into gear. All I got was a lot of grinding.

Assuming something in the clutch (gear) area is stuck since the tractor has not been run for almost ten years.

Question - What do I check first?? What steps should I follow???

Thank you in advance for your assistance. David

clutch disc is probably stuck to the flywheel. I would split it as its probably no good and the flywheel will need to be resurfaced. Its dangerous but having someone pull to start in gear then pushing the clutch in and hitting the brakes can sometimes unstick the disc but be prepared to kill the engine if that doesent free it up be careful.

Yes, the correct term for that is DISengage. This is not to nit-pick, it is so everyone is using the same terms when they are talking about something. When people use two different (opposite) words to mean the same thing it gets very confusing.

It sounds like the clutch is stuck to the flywheel to me as well.

However, I don't think it's the "doom and gloom" situation that gene bender does. Usually just driving the tractor around a little with the pedal pushed will cause the clutch to pop loose. Sometimes you need to get on the brakes.

This is somewhat dangerous, because you have to start the tractor in gear. Do it where you have PLENTY of room, and always be thinking about shutting the tractor off the moment you think there is a bit of trouble.

Many times the front stub of the drive shaft will hang up in the pilot bushing in the flywheel requiring lubrication. Tape a couple of spray straws together and reach them in through the hand hole in the bottom of the torque tube to the front of the shaft. Spray your favorite penetrant or lube. Sometimes helps to have the tractor parked on a downhill slope so it runs down the shaft. To test for this try starting the tractor in gear with the clutch pedal pushed in. Also often helps if the pto is in gear to increase drag on the driveline.

put it in 4th gear and try to start it, mine done this and that worked fine, if that don't work get your tools out.
