F 20 exhaust pipe and muffler

Someone cut the opening in the hood, all the way out to the edge of the hood. I assume that they did this so that the hood could be removed without removing the muffler and the steering shaft. Before I put the hood back on this tractor, I bought a used muffler for it at a swap meet. The exhaust pipe is about 1.375 below the hood opening and when I put the muffler on, it sits too close to the hood. Is the pipe to short, or does the proper muffler for the F20 have a longer stem than most other mufflers?
Thank you

F20s did not come from the factory with a muffler, just a cast elbow that directed the exhaust to the side. Even so, the pipe coming out of the manifold should extend above the hood.

what manifold do you have ? the Heisler gas manifold has a pipe that screws in to the manifold that probably has rusted off too short. If so you can replace that pipe with a longer one. If you have an IH gas manifold they have a "chimney" that bolts on to the manifold with 3 bolts and should stick up above the hood enough to put a muffler or elbow on without hitting the hood, those chimneys are available from several sources.

SDE, As others said, the F20 did not come with a muffler, just the exhaust elbow. But you could get a muffler from IH that fit the F20 some time later. My dad had one on our F20 and when I painted it in 1970, I was still able to purchase a new one from IH. Picture shows the muffler you could get from IH. As you can see, the 3-bolt exhaust pipe extension is higher than the hood. I still have the F20 but had to put a new gas manifold on it a few years ago. I had to make an adapter to make this muffler fit on the new manifold as the exhaust pipe was smaller. Al

It has a 2" pipe nipple threaded into it now. I did not try to remove it. I thought I might end up breaking the manifold and having more problems than I had started with. I think I will look at my other two 400s and see if one of them will have a muffler that will fit better and if not then I will try to remove the nipple and replace it with a longer one.
Thank you everyone
Steve

I see in the picture that you have a starter on your tractor. Where is your battery located? I remember back in the 60s that Grandpa had his mounted to the frame rail on the left side. But I am not going to bet any money on that because I was just a kid then.

My dad mounted the battery on the right side frame rails. The generator is also in the right side. This picture is from last year. Al

Go to a muffler shop and get a 30 inch piece of pipe that will fit over the manifold pipe.

It will sound better and look like it did in the 1940s when farmers got tired of breathing the exhaust that came out of the standard elbow.

I do like Dean said . I have a muffler shop that will make an etension the size I need. The shop I use can make it out of steel or stainless steel.

I never saw one with a muffler.awhile back I wondered if that was way always had so much trouble with the valves.i know on international 2010 trucks if exhaust went bad and you didn't fixit right away you ruaned valves

The Farmall Regular had what amounted to a downdraft exhaust. F-20 and F-30 both went up through the hood. Factory correct is the 90 degree elbow (as has been stated). You can proceed as you wish because it is your tractor. Why not take the manifold with the existing pipe to a welder, and have them add an extension to it? Or if there is enough room, have the end threaded and just put a coupler on it?
