1950 H starter the same as any other H?

Am I correct in assuming the H, SH, W-4, I-4 starters are the same? The H, SH, M, SM starter is the same as well? What is different about the H starter and the 300 starter?

Actually, the H and M starters are the same, just "clocked" differently. They will interchange. I can't say for sure just from memory, but I think the 300 uses a 3 bolt mounting flange, versus the 2 bolt on the H and M.

Thanks. My starter is acting up. This tractor was converted to 12 volt some years ago, not recently. Well I think the starter has had enough because when I go to start it, usually nothing happens. I have to tap the starter and when I do it sparks quite a bit and barely cranks the engine over. I got a brand new starter on order for $122. Hopefully it will last a good few years but I dont have my hopes too high as I am sure it is Chinese.

H W-4 and M used the same starter # along with stage one SM. But real late H SW4 and stage one SH used a 2 bolt mount starter with a pull switch mounted on it. Stage 2 SH and SM gas both used the same starter with 3 bolt mounting and a pull switch mounted to it. 300 used a 3 bolt mount starter with a electrical energized switch mounted to the starter.

Rebuilding yours should be on your agenda. Then you can either sell the "new" one or keep it as a spair. Jim

Just like a generator, starters also have brushes and bearing that will eventually need to be replaced.
