Farmall 350 PTO

When ever my I get a sharp angle on a PTO (pulling mower through a ditch, sharp corner with the baler etc...) I get a knocking sound deep in the transmission of the tractor. What is this? Is this an indicator of a bigger issue or do they all do that under stress?

Don't know what you are pulling but if the implement has only a two joint PTO shaft such as a pull type hay tedder, it will NEVER run quietly in a sharp turn.

First of all make sure your implement PTO shaft is in good shape. No sloppy bearing supports, worn out U joint crosses etc. Next check that you have 14 inches from the end of the tractor PTO shaft to the center of the hitch pin hole. This is CRITICAL. Had a 350 long ago and couldn't get Dad to buy the correct hitch plate for the fast hitch drawbar and the PTO rattled in every turn.

If you have Fast Hitch, tighten up all the slop in it and make it as rigid as possible.

If you get everything right in the PTO drive line, I bet your noise will go away. I have a NH488 haybine and I can turn 90 degrees to the right under full load and it is as quiet as straight ahead.

Are you sure it is in the transmission? On my case baler if I turn too short the u-joints will rattle and I ruined one shaft before I realized what it was doing to the u-joints. Pounded the ends where the u-joint caps fit so they were all loose.

Its deep in the transmission below my feet - you can actually feel it - almost like base in stereo. It is not the U joints chattering.

The IPTO has a couple of gears just behind the clutch housing allowing it to bypass the clutch so that it is live. One is attached to the shaft that comes from the flywheel and runs against the gear that runs the shaft to the IPTO (someone can correct me on the configuration). This might be the noise provided the gears are worn, and may be louder under the stress you mention -- This is only a guess. I still vote for the u joints transmitting the vibration under your feet, as they are not directly over any gears for the PTO.
