Cub parts - did I get the right ones...

Received a box of parts today (from this site). I am putting them on my 1951 cub. Not sure about two...

Tune up kit - IHTK1 - This DOES NOT say cub on the back? Did I buy wrong kit? It came with spark plugs, condensor, points, etc.
Start Switch - Saddle Mount....not like the one that came off the tractor. It has a starter button and it appears the starter rod would be fixed. Opinions on this type of starter switch. Should I stick to the one that is toggled by the starter rod?

Your insight is appreciated.

do you have a mag or a dist? Your starter needs a button for the saddle sw to mount and it is used with a pull rod to make the starter run. If your starter has a threaded post that sw will not work.

The tune up kit is right, even without specifying on the package it is for a Cub. That one kit fits just about every 4-cylinder gas-powered tractor built by IH that used the IH distributor. In fact, except for the rotor, the Cub's J-4 magneto uses the very same parts.

Does your Cub start by pulling a rod that's attached by a lever to the starting switch? or does it start by turning a switch/pushing a button that's connected to a solenoid that is in turn connected to a threaded lug on the starter? If it's the first one, then the new switch is the correct one. If it's the second type, then no, and it's not what you need at all.

How do you mount the condenser for the mag in a dist to start with it wont fit as its longer and has a threaded stud.

Sometimes you get shown teh light....

I learned tonight (after reading replies and looking at OLD starter switch) that teh rod pulls a toggle that compresses a starter button....Up until tonight, I thought that by simply pulling the rod and making contact the starter would spin! WRONG! The button must be compressed! And this is the reason I could not get the starter to spin and the engine to roll over the other day! Duh!!!! That being said the old starter switch is kind of tough to engage so the new one was money well worth it.

The IH J-4 magneto used on the Cub uses the same internal parts (points and condenser) and cap as the IH distributor. Only the rotor, which is gear-driven, is different.

The condenser for the Cub's magneto does NOT have a threaded stud:

So then the parts on this site arent correct as it says part#71455c1 condenser fits h-4 and j-4 mags wouldnt be the first time parts lists have had an error just like the starters for the A and B use the push rod but lots of the parts say the same starter for A,B,SA,C and SC.

Yes. That condenser will never fit in the J-4, and I can't imagine why it would be advertised as suitable for it. The good news is that if someone looks specifically for Cub parts they won't find it.

I find thre are lots of parts listed in newer books that have mistakes over the yrs when printing things do get mixed up NAPA couldnt find a listing for a condenser for the H-4 the other day and my close dealer for Car Quest has sold to NAPA. Same thing for the fan belts for the A,B,BN and C as SC with water pump are different but some listings list same size for all. Prestolite dist are different and some dont even list them. Ya just gots to know thats why i tell people to take old ones along.
