Have a 1256 with alternator, only one wire. The wire go from back of alternator to hot post on battery. Should there be wire that plug in to the alternator? the problem I'm having is the battery seem to be over charging. Boiling the water out. thanks Eddie

You have a -so called- one wire alternator. It is likely causing the issue.
The image here will do the trick when installing a much more controlled alternator. Delco 10SI 3 wire. If you do not want to use an amp gauge, just use the same hookup for the alt big wire to the starter terminal going to the battery. I recommend the fuse link to avoid melt down of wiring. The mention of a mag is because this wiring will also work for a mag or diesel. (neither need elecrticity to run. Jim

Also if your 1256 still has 2 batteries (6 volt in series to make 12 volts), if one battery is boiling and the other is not, your problem is a cable connection between the batteries, or the battery cover might be shorting the wrong post to ground. Also the batteries could be connected wrong and be operating at only 6 volts (I don't think it would start!) You might even have 2 12 volts hooked up wrong (24volts!), since anything can happen in 40 some years with untold numbers of hands messing with it.

It's very tempting to switch to one group 31 (12 volt) battery on these tractors, even though it isn't factory correct
