Has anyone put a rope style seal in instead of the felt? Or better yet, a 2 piece rubber seal? My new seal is leaking like an oil well.

I put a new felt seal in my MD and it leaks terrible when it gets warm. It barely leaked before. I have heard you can knock the edge off the swirl and run a rubber one. If it works you are ok, but if it doesn't then you also just ruined your crank.

I have noticed that some of the felts are a little on the small size. I normally have to really fight to get the whole felt in place but the last ones I used went in very easy. Do not cut off any ends of felt and stuff it all in retainer.. Make sure the gasket between the halves fits properly and most of all, the entire retainer has to be straight. Most are all pulled out of shape including where the two halves bolt together. Oil it only after it is in the retainer not before. Use a good high temp sealer on retainer like tuff stuff or what ever the various mfg's calls it. Regular RTV sealant might not hold.
