I have a BN that leaks all the trans oil out and its coming out of where the torque tube meets the front of the transmission. I suspect a seal on the end of the shafts. Was wondering if anyone has split the tractor there instead of the engine side of the torque tube because it looks like it would be easier. Can you undo the drive shaft without pulling it out of the clutch? Any other potential problems to watch out for? What do you think? Any help is appreciated. Thanks..Fred

Ive split many there you do need to be able to roll one end apart best if its on wheels. After moving apart a few inches then you can unhook the drive shaft from the yoke coming out of the tranny. Or remove two blots on the u-joint. I would also replace the bearing. You also need to remove the bolts holding left brake and clutch pedals as that shaft goes thru the bell housing and the tranny cant move until they are loose from the platform as they will slide apart along with bell housing. I can do it in two hrs but i do have wheels to let one end roll apart.

the last time I split My BN If I recall correctly I split it at the engine. and the prop shaft just pulled out of the clutch / fly wheel. Splitting it at the back of the prop tube housing you have to deal with the throw out bearing. It may seam simpler to split it at the back I didn't think about it just worked from the front. Sling and support the engine. If you have an equipment mounting bar ( cultivator bar attachment) for the front or can make one that will assist in supporting the front of the tractor and keep it upright.
The back / tran and rear end the rear wheels will keep steady just set on an makeshift bench or roller cart.
>> Two places the leak may be the lower 1st.2nd 3rd 4th shaft it is just a cap with a shim and seal pack use good quality auto gasket maker; the upper is the input prop shaft there check the oil seal and shaft face //if worn use a speedy sleeve to repair the shaft if needed. **** see other's comments and notes about these. also use auto gasket maker to reseal flange.
Best to you work safe.

When I split my Super A at the clutch housing the drive shaft just came out of the clutch with no difficulties. I then undid the 4 bolts at the front of the gear-box having supported the back end of the tractor on the draw-bar and front of the final reduction gears, then pulled the torque tube far enough forward to undo the drive shaft coupling just in front of the gear-box. I could then take the torque tube off to clean out the inside of 65 years of dirt, grease and carbon from the thrust bearing. It turned out that the thrust bearing (which seemed to be impossible to find replacements and the ball bearing ones shown as replacements would not fit in the housing) showed relatively little wear after all those years and was able to be put back when re-assembling.
