Hey, do any of you guys have a tool to install the garter spring onto the garter sleeve on the hydrotouch control valve ? Or, Rather, do anybody Have a drawing of one I can make, or a place I can purchase one? I spent at least 3 hours yesterday trying to get that durned thing on. I was so shamed of the words I used I neer bit my toung off. any help much appreciated.

It is a bullet shaped hollow tool and it just fits over the end of the spool. I have put them on with valves in place where the factory tool was too long to use by cobbling up a short piece of tubing. Trick is to install spring in retainer with anything available and then insert a piece of tubing into retainer to hold spring in while you install it on end of valve.

I used a socket before I got the correct tool.

Tool number ED-3396
Length = 2 3/8"
OD = 1"
Taper starts 3/4" from end and tapers to 3/8"
End that is not tapered is machined out to a depth of 1/2"
The hole in that end is .940" leaving a wall .030"thick

Did you buy the tool from I H or an individual ? Down here in Texas The IH dealer Just says everything is 'unavailable'

I just got through refurbishing the three valves on my 400. To reseat the garter springs I used the end of a tapered funnel I cut off to the same diameter as the end of the valve the spring slipped onto. You work the spring into the retainer slot while slowly pushing the two down the funnel piece untill the retainer slips int place. Worked like a charm!

The tool has most likely been unavailable for 40 years.

During the early to mid 80s there were a lot of dealerships that failed and auctioned off their shop equipment. I got almost all my special tools by buying that at those auctions.

I used a scrap piece of aluminum flashing. I rolled it into a cone and slid the spring in its spot. Using the aluminum flashing made it easy to tweak to the perfect diameter.
