F-20 temperature gauge

The '37 F-20 I'm restoring had a temperature gauge on it at one time... by the time I got it, the gauge and lead were gone... all that was left was the probe end that threads into the water elbow behind the carburetor. I've only found one topic on YT that discusses the F-20 temperature gauge- in it, one gentleman said that without a radiator shutter (which my tractor doesn't have) the gauge won't move off cold. I don't plan on doing any heavy work with the tractor.

I have two questions:
(1) Do you guys agree that the gauge will just sit on cold without a shutter and without being worked hard?

(2) If it is worth the time and $ to put a temp gauge back on it, does anybody have a pic of where the gauge is placed?

Wih no shutters and not "working", the heat gauge is
a waste of time-and money.Heat gauges were needed
when burning distilate so the engine could be kept
at a constant 'hot' temp to fully burn the fuel

Yes, if you have a new radiator core, the temp gauge won't move much (I had to check the temperature gauge on my W-12 in boiling water to make sure it worked!). However, it you are using the existing radiator core, a temp gauge may be useful to double check the cooling system

Rice Equipment has them.

I put a new temperature gauge on my F20 back in the 70s when it was repainted. But like others said, it never moves off of cold. It mounts under the gas tank on the left side. The attached picture actually shows the amp gauge on my F20 which I mounted on the right side opposite the temp gauge. It has a starter and generator. I can take a picture of the left side temp gauge if you want. Al

I have a 37 F20 and has working shutters and temp gauge but gauge ony moves if you work it hard. I have had my F-20 for about 40 years and and am redoing it for the second time.

I like the fenders on your F 20 . When I get done going through my tractor I am going to put a set on it.

I drilled and tapped a hole for mine in the upper water manifold, and it works fine up there. As the others have said it will never read anything in the original location without shutters or choking off the air flow through the radiator somehow. I wanted mine to work and actually tell me if the engine was overheating.
