My Tach/hour meter is not working.

I have a new to me IH 504 or 2504 - Serial number tag says 504 but the name plates on each side say 2504 - it probably doesn't matter.

It runs well but has a few issues which I will be taking a look as time allows. Of course I am going to change the engine oil and grease everything that is supposed to be greased. I don't have the shop manuals yet but they are in the mail.

One of the many little things is the Tachometer. When the engine is running the needle bounces from 0 to about 500 rpms no matter what the engine is doing. This is probably more from vibration than actual engine performance.

I suppose I will have to remove the steering wheel and the panel assembly to get at the back side of the tach.

The hour meter doesn't seem to be turning either so it is possible that there is no power to it. Would a lack of power cause the tach portion to not work? :?:

Your tractor has a mechanical tach/hourmeter.It uses
a flexible cable to 'power' it.The cable could be
dry, needing lubeing. that's why its bouncy. or it
could be broken. The tach could also be broken,in
that case it needs replace ing.

tachometer drive gear is probably wore out. it is located at distributor. is usually a dealer item.just bought one last year for my 504 diesel. around a 100 bucks
