Voltage Regulator on a farmall Cub

NEITHER a voltage regular NOR a cutout need to be polarized. It is the GENERATOR that needs to be polarized, which in the case of typical IH/Delco "A" circuit generators, requires it"s "Armature" terminal to be momentarily connected to the non-grounded side of the battery. Since completing this circuit is easily done at the cutout or VR, folks get the idea they are polarizing THOSE components, when they are actually polarizing the GENERATOR.

What polarizing does is to restore the residual magnetism in the polepieces and "frame" of the generator in the correct direction so the generator begins charging with it"s polarity matching that of the battery at initial startup.

Saves having to replace the smoke that can potentially leak out of the electrical system at a cost of quite a few bucks!

AAAAAAAAAA MENNNNNNNNNNNN

Not much to add to that other then perhaps,

Yet another reason the Billy Bobs and Bubbas of the world are of the mistaken impression the VR or Cutout Relays need Polarized, IS BECAUSE WHEN THEY BUY ONE THERE ARE INSTRUCTION HOW TO POLARIZE IN THE BOX. Why is that Billy??? Its because if the tractor is started and the genny is polarized opposite from the system YOU CAN FRY THAT NEW VR HMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Also on many 4 terminal VR's where the GEN/ARM terminal is hard to get at under the VR, simply flash instead (from a hot ungrounded battery voltage source, such as present on the BAT terminal on the VR) to the gennys ARM post

I think we pretty well have him covered now??

No harm in "insisting" or having an opinion I reckon EVEN IF ITS DEAD WRONG LOL. Its kinda like the old politicians quote "everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but NOT their own facts"

Take care Teddy

The system wants Positive ground make sure thats the way it is before polorizing the genn.. Does it have a cut-out or a regulator.

Make sure you get the correct regulator for that gen. Read the Delco # on the gen to make sure you get the correct reg. The three brush gen takes a different reg than the two brush model and make sure they are for pos ground.
