weak / no pto on 1206 International

I was mowing with my 1206 international "15 ft rotary cutter. The pto quit instantly. I disconnected the mower pto and tried the pto. It tries to turn. I am speculating either the bypass valve is failing or the clutches tore out. The pto was rebuilt last year. Any ideas would be appreciated

Check the operating pressure at the test port, for reference. Then, remove the control valve, and check to see if pin, Key# 27 is broken.

Well with out putting a gauge on it we are both guessing , but here goes. IF it will not engage after you shut it off and tryed to restart then i am GUESSEN that the tiny little pin that holds the two halfs of the valve broke . So to fix it if that is the problem then your going to have to drop the draw bar support and unhook the linkage and remove the valve out the bottom of the PTO unit . This can be done with mim. fluid loss IF you fast at getting the plug back in . When you re install the valve then your going to need the test port fitting and a gauge capable of reading 600 PSI to reset the pressure HOT and myself i would set the pressure at around 240-260 psi .

if with nothing hooked to it, you raise the handle, feel the spring in the valve as your linkage goes over center, and the shaft turns a little bit, that means the little pin is NOT broken. usually it breaks when you flip the lever up and down too fast, not in steady going.

if your lockup pressure wasn't set right when the pto was rebuilt, you could have smoked the clutches. however, they usually won't go all at once- they'll get weaker and weaker.

i wouldn't be surprised if you lost the big snap ring that holds the stack of clutch plates in the clutch cup. (ref # 61 in the parts diagram). i've seen it pop out of its groove on a 986.

That also could have happened , as i have seen this several times . One was on a 1566 pulling a large square baler . They fried the clutch pac on it and i did a rebuild on it . a couple days later they called and said that it just stopped working , so back down to there place and pulled the unit and found that the snap ring had come out . So i turned the snap ring over as there was a little roundness on the one side and put it all back together . Two days later they call and said it stopped again . So back out and back in and this time i stayed and watched them bale with it . The Heston big square baler had a short PTo shaft and NO CV joint and on tight turns that shaft would not chatter but hammer hard and that would shake the snap ring out and it did on the forth or fifth turn . To stop this from happening again as i was getting real tired of WARRANTY work i took a piece of 1/4 inch Key stock and cut it to fit tight between the end s of the snap ring and tacked welded it in place , problem solved it never came out again .

Thanks for the ideas. As a followup to all posts. First I have not had time to work on the unit. I have to finish this job asap so am using the backup tractor.

I had replaced the pin last year when I rebuilt the unit. To the point made by Bob and Mazemeister. The pto still turns but intermittent and weak. With the pin broken (27) I would get no rotation Correct?

To the point made by mazemeister and the tractor vet. I was on a turn when the unit quit. The CV joint was chattering a bit. If the snap ring came off would I get any rotation on the pto? I am noticing about 1/16 inch movement backwards of the pto shaft when I engage the pto. Now the pto engages everytime. The mower is 20 miles away so have no way to test how strong the pto is turning. The first of next week I hope to have time to put a pressure gage on the unit.

The movement of the 1000 rpm PTO shaft when engaging the PTO is the result of the PTO brakes being released. The brakes are spring applied and force the shaft forward when applied. When released the shaft is free to move with whatever free play there is in the shaft.
