706 fuel gauge

Does anyone know how to check what is wrong with the fuel gauge on a 706. It has power coming into the back of the gauge but all it shows is empty. Can anyone tell me how to determine if its the gauge or the sending unit. Thanks Larry

Ground the wire at the sending unit or the wire at the gauge going to the sending unit , if the tank unit is bad by grounding the wire the gauge will go to full.

I tried doing that and all the gauge did was barely move. So I'm guessing that the gauge is bad?

It well could be the gauge but make sure that you have 12 volts on the hot side if the gauge while grounding the sensor lead before condemning it.
