International 2400/464 Fuel problems

Hello, I am having some trouble with my 1977 International 2400B. When I start it cold, it runs good for about 3 minutes and then starts loosing rpm's. However, it idles without any problems, only looses power when idling up. I found an air leak in the primary fuel filter o-ring. I fixed it and it ran great for about 30 minutes running 1500rpms, then started to miss again. I am pretty sure I fixed the air leak so I am not sure what else it could be. It did develop a leak on the injector pump, so I am thinking maybe it is leaking from there. Any help would really be appreciated.

If NAPA/WIX filters are used make sure the top outer fuel inlet groove is open. Have made service calls to remove an extra O ring, restricting flow. Top is sealed with O ring in base groove only. See this done on MF Perkins engines, or anything with CAV 296/796 style filters. Worth a look.

Hi, I assume the 2400B is a Diesel. Most common
problem on that style of tractor is junk in the
bottom of the fuel tank. With a clean bucket under
the fuel line take the fuel line off at the input
to the primary fuel filter and let it run into the
bucket. The fuel should flow the full of the fuel
line pipe. If it does not or gradually slows down
then junk is blocking the fuel outlet in the
bottom of the tank. If you have good flow into
fuel filters the next place is to check at input
to injection pump. Depending if your tractor has
the 1 or 2 fuel filter system, the fuel line comes
around the front of the engine and before going
into injection pump the line changes from steel to
flexible and sometimes the inside of the flexible
part will collapse.

If you have junk in the tank you must drain both
sides and remove the outlet valve and clean. My
brother's 684 had the remnants of a lady bug that
would blog the outlet screen.

I have the 2 filter system, but I bypassed the secondary filter right before the injector pump. (I think it was sucking air through the o-ring on the glass bowl). Even with it bypassed, it will only run well for about 5-10 min before losing power. The weird thing is that it will idle just fine, just won't do anything more. After that, if I let it sit for about 30 minutes, it will start up just fine and then do it again. I will have to check the fuel tank like you said, because it makes since that it could be starving for fuel.

There is also a small leak on the injector pump. Just a small drip. But im not sure that is the problem because I used it for a long time with the small drip like that. Thank you for the feedback and I will post again after I am able to try the tank cleaning.

I did change the filters and used the extra o-ring. But I have since then removed them and the problem still persists. I also even bypassed the secondary filter just to see if that would help, but no luck.

Hi Brent, quick fix is to remove fuel line from tank
to primary filter at the inlet to the fuel filter
and the with compressed air blow back into fuel
tank. If the outlet in fuel tank is plugged this
will clear it out temporarily.
