Starting a 10-20

Dan, I give mine 1/2 advance and about 3/4
trottle and no choke at all. It will start on first, second or third crank depending when it ran last or if it is hot from running. oldiron29

It's been along time like 1949 or 1950 since I cranked over the 10-20 we had bought new in 1926 before I was born. I think we always cranked ours
by having the spark lever up the throttle lever down at an idle. Hal

If your mag is good, clean plugs, and the carb is right, here is how an old timer taught me to start these old girls:

1.) spark off (grounded). full choke. throttle 1/2. Crank over 2-3 times. slow is fine.
2.) spark 1/3 advanced. 1/2 - 2/3 choke. Throttle 1/3.
3.) give her a couple of quick up strokes. DO NOT wrap your thumb over the crank handle. Cradle it in your cupped hand. Start at 6:00, and pull up. Short quick stroke.
4.) when she starts, advance timing to full advance. Open choke appropriately as she warms up.

If the mag is good, plugs clean, and carb right, she'll fire right up.
