farmall H clutch

I am beginning a restoration of an H. I know I don't have to split the tractor to replace clutch, but I am going to - so that I can do other items (seals, cleaning of inside of rails, etc).

Is there anything I need to do prior to, besides blocking up rear, etc? Can I simply remove the bolts from the frame to the rear and slide out.

I have a 4 ton boom crane I am using to walk it out. I have done this on a C, but wasn't sure on the H.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

You will be much happier if you make the stands in the link (page it down). The H is much heavier than the C. I don't weld so I had them made, and painted the rails inside and out before using the stands. Put duct tape over the rails before using the stands and the paint won't be damaged. I also pulled the engine when it was split. The stands make every thing easier to do.

great - thanks for the pictures. Even with those, when I split - do I simply remove the frame bolts and walk it out?

Yes, but there may be a bolt inside where the starter is, my Super H does not have one -- you might check. There are also two smaller bolts at the top of the clutch housing that may be mostly hidden by the gas tank and the air cleaner.

Unscrew but do not remove the bolts through the frame rails. The bolts need to remain in the frame and backing plate to hold the back of the engine. Otherwise the engine will be supported only bu the front motor mounts.

Like Owen said, leave the bolts in the frame rail holes so you support the rear of the engine. Other than that all you really have to do is slide it forward.

It is a lot better to split the tractor to do the clutch because you can take the flywheel out and get it resurfaced.

Owen,

I am now confused. Isn't there the (4) bolts on each side, there is one long bolt next to the starter and then the threaded looking screws or bolts.

What else am I missing and don't I put nuts on those screw looking type and back out?

Did you remove the starter and the bolt into the engine inside the hole? Also a dowel pin is on each side that it helps to remove them first if they are really tight in the hole. They look like the threaded end of a bolt sticking out of the front side of the steel engine plate.
One way on moving the engine, frame rails and bolsters away from the center housing is to put some dowel pins or long bolts in the frame rails to housing holes, one on a side. Move apart enough to install 2 or 4 bolts and a nut back in the rails to steel plate. Them finish moving apart.
