Allis #3 and H , follow-up answer

I recently posted about adapting a #3 Allis sickle mower to an H . The answer is it is almost a direct bolt on. I just had to open up one mounting hole with the blue tip wrench, and then it all fits nice, even the PTO shield fits. Very happy ! Gonna try it out tomorow.

I used it for cutting pasture weeds tonight, what a nice unit ! Very well designed and thought out, even better than the JD #5 I used to use. I also have had a NH trailer type sickle mower, but the semi mount like this Allis is so much more manuverable and handy to me.

That mower literally looks like it was made for the tractor (even down to how even the mower PTO shield clips onto the tractors PTO shield). What specifically is superior on the AC #3 mower as compared to the JD #5 mower? (note: I have neither mower in question and have zero interest in a color war. Just simply curious of the advantages as I do have a Farmall h, a Farmall M, and even a JD A. I never know what implement that I might want to add in future...good info helps those choices).

I also wonder about that... my dad had a JD #5 when he had a JD B and then a Farmall C, but when he got a Super C, he got an IH Fast Hitch mower (don't recall the model #) for it. I was a kid, but mowed with both of them, more with the IH, but thought the JD was heavier duty. I don't recall having a problem with either of them. I recall using the JD starting at about age 10 or 11, and 14 for the IH.

Well dont get me wrong, the JD #5 was a great machine . Remember also, that I am adapting mowers to an H that were not meant for an H, it was meant for a JD or an Allis respectivly. So this is only how it works for me, not a judgement on which is better. First off, that round clamp mounting on the JD always gave me fits when mounting, it looks simple enough, but try it all alone without the factory jackstands or having the tractor it was designed for.The JD was a wobbly unstable sucker when demounted, and was a finger pinching ,cuss word maker to mount. The Allis sits there with 1 block of wood and doesnt wobble or seem ready to fall at any moment. The sickle holding rod for the upright position is bent just right, it also captures the manual lift arm and keeps the mower in the lifted position when unhooked from the tractor. Thats clever and well thought out. It also needs no tools and has a storage spot for that rod. All the zerks are easy to see and get at. No gearbox, no chains, all shafts are heavy duty and simple. It is smoother when cutting, maybe because it incorporates a belt off the PTO main shaft? The breakback is well designed too. I had some truoble with the one on the JD and could never seem to get it adjusted just right, it would unhook too easy for me. Keep in mind too, I have had this one exactly one day, had the JD for 15 years, so time may tell a different story, but so far , I really like this one better. It looks like it was made to fit an H !

BTW, you may see in the picture that I have both the manual lift lever and the hydralic cylinder on it. I am using the hydralic and just letting the manual lift arm ride up and down freely, doesnt look like will be any problem. Fella I got it from had a WC with no hydralics, and that is the WC hitch that I am using that lined up so nicely on my H.

Thanks for the explanation. As I said, I was 10 or 11 to 13 when I used Dad's JD mower and although I'm sure I helped hook it up and service it, I don't remember that much about it. I remember Dad changed the JD from a manual lever when he had it on the JD B to a rod that connected to the Touch Control on the C, and that was the way it operated by the time I was old enough to use it. On the Fast Hitch model, the F-H lifted the entire mower and set the height for the "base" or inside of the cutter bar, but the T-C lifted the bar. As I recall, the bar holding rod was pretty similar on the IH and JD and the IH had a clip and the JD had a bracket with a hole you stuck it through and screwed the "wing nut" back on (Or maybe I have them reversed... been a [u:7b2b6d624e]lot[/u:7b2b6d624e] of years).
Either way, anytime I pass and smell a fresh mown field, it takes me back.

Good and honest feedback - thanks that was exactly what I was looking for.

As I stated in my first post that AC mower literally does look like it was made for an h even down to how the mower pto shield clips to the tractor pto shield.
