F-20 Magnito

jake in Iowa

The mag on my Dad"s F-20 went dead, not really knowing much about them I"m wondering if it needs to go to a repair shop or is there something I can do to fix it ?

Jake, there are a couple of things to check. First off, clean the points up and make sure they are gapped correctly. 2ndly, make sure the impulse is working. 3rdly, make sure there isn't junk in the points area that would short them out.

Start there. It could also be the condenser, it could be the coil. Could be a grounded wire from the points. could be a number of things, but start with the easy ones. Expect to pay around $125 - $150 to have the F4 rebuilt. If you choose to do it yourself, you will have around $70-$80 in parts. That would be points, condenser, and coil if needed.

The magnets may be getting weak. If none of the suggestions fix the problem touch the magnets with a flatblade screwdriver. Hal

Good point Hal. If you remove the magnet and put it up against a steel post or similar, it should be able to hold its own weight and not "fall". BE CAREFUL, don't let it drop and hit the ground, as it is brittle, and could break.

(quoted from post at 06:59:10 07/11/13) Do you mean like attaching cables of a battery charger to it?
Positive on one end, negative on the other?
Nope. The magnet is Charged by an electromagnetic field generated by the chargers in the pics, not current flow.

Send your mags to NebraskaKirk on here, He does great work and you just set the timing and go.
