I am going to be changing the oil in our C soon, I have some Shell 10W40 automotive oil, or some 15W40 Delvac. What do you recommend? I have heard about modern automotive oils not being adequate for older engines. This tractor gets worked pretty hard occasionally with a Woods mower.

The 10w40 is fine. you can get ZDDP at advance auto and from the internet. If you are going to work the old girl, I would add the ZDDP each oil change.

I do.

oops, didn't see you had 15w40. Either is fine, but if I had to choose, I would take the 15w40 also. BUT, you won't go wrong either way.

Remember one thing. More important than the brand of oil, and more important than straight weight vs. multi-vis, is choosing the right viscosity AND changing it regularly.

HD30 or 10w30, 10w40, 15w40, all are fine. HD20 in the winter around my parts. Brand of your liking.

The designation of oil weights is somewhat arbitrary but generally indicates the shape of a viscosity curve (honey has a high viscosity and water a lower viscosity) plotted against temperature of the oil. The shape of the 30 WT curve is not that much different from a 20-40 WT curve with the 20-40 oil having slightly lower viscosity at low temperature and slightly higher viscosity at higher temperatures. That might be a better fit for an engine where one would want good lubrication at start and sustained lubrication at higher running temperatures. Otherwise the better quality oil has a lower viscosity at low temperatures . . . so that the 5-whatever WT will be a good quality oil that will not tend to break down under use and abuse as quickly as the other oils.
