I have an odd problem with my 656. We were baling hay yesterday afternoon, when she sputtered and died. It would START, but only run for a few seconds. After about 10 minutes, it would run for about 15-20 minutes, then sputter out again.

At first I thought it was fuel (tank) related (rust issues), but she would run fine in reverse or any gear on the top side of the shift pattern (reverse, 2nd, 4th...), but IMMEDIATLY sputter/die when the clutch moved when in 1st, 3rd, or 5th.

It is a gas model and I have had problems with the "clutch safety switch" lately. I dunno if that would affect it while it is running though....

Usually happens when at idle....

Any ideas.....?

Gasoline might not be the issue. It could be a wire in the dash getting in trouble with the wiring. Jim

Just on what you have stated so far I would be looking for some wiring (possibly bare) hitting the shifter linkage and shorting out in those ranges where it will not run inside the dash. If that is not it then I would be looking at those safety switches too. A meter plus a jumper wire should let you bypass a switch to verify it is or is not the culprit.

Look for the problem above the battery. The shift linkage levers above the battery lift up when shifting into 1,3, or 5. Look for a bare wire or poor connection in that area.
