what does the connection look like from the exaust manifold to the collector elbow mounted on the fire wall puzzled!

Its a sheet metal muffler.

The perforated pipe goes from the manifold through the firewall into the elbow casting that's bolted to the firewall. If you look at this elbow you will see a casting lip inside where this pipe lines up. The muffler bolts on the opposite side of the fire wall from the cast exhaust elbow.
