Ed has it, but make certain what the polarity is now before you hook up a battery. You will ruin the alternator if it has one.

Alternator must have negative ground, generator is supposed to have positive ground but will work either way. Positive ground will ruin an alternator.

You can get an alternator in 6v, 12V posative or negative ground. 99% are 12V negative ground.

First off, is it a generator or alternator?

If it has a cutout it should be pos gnd and if you have a reg check the reg and it shoild be marked underneath which is ground. But you have an old tractor and so you will not know what has been changed over the yrs. One good way is to read the part# on the gen.

If it has an alternator it is negative ground. If it has a generator it can be pos or neg ground. Here"s a handy way to usually determine whether it"s pos or neg ground: Looking at the terminals on your ignition coil, take a look at the low-voltage wire that goes from one of the terminals on the coil, to the distributor. If it leaves from the negative terminal on the coil, it"s a negative ground tractor. If it leaves the positive terminal on the coil, it"s a positive ground tractor. Good luck.

Magneto has nothing to do with the charging system.

The only times you'd be concerned about the ignition is if it has a battery ignition system, or someone cobbed in a battery coil on to bypass a failed magneto coil.
