My '41 A has been steaming from the exhaust the lat two times I started it up. I know that means water in the oil. What should I do? Would draining the oil and changing it be worth a shot? Or should I just replace the head gasket?
Thanks,
Wade

Gasket, cracked head, cracked block, cracked sleeve. About all you can do is pull the head and start looking.

I would start by letting it sit 24-48 hours and then slowly open up the oil drain plug. DO NOT pull it all the way out but open it up just till it starts to drip. Watch for what comes out as in oil or water. Also what color the fluid is as in green or clear water. If clear maybe water down the exhaust if green then you got other problems which could be head gasket or sleeve seals etc

Just a thought...

Are you sure it's water in the OIL? I would think it would be water (or coolant) in the cylinders, expelled along with the exhaust from combustion.

I suppose it's possible that there's a bunch of water settled in the bottom of the oil pan that gets pumped "upstairs" and finds its way into the cylinders, but then I would think you'd have an oil burning problem as well -- especially after eliminating any water from the pan.

Old's suggestion is a good start; you can quickly confirm or rule out excessive water in the oil pan.

Thanks for the replys! I will start with checking the oil as old suggested. The tractor never sits out, so water down the exhust can be outruled. At this point I am hoping it is the head gasket. If the head gasket is blown, will it be identifiable when I look at it? And if so how?
Thanks

As a wild guess i would say the head is rusted thru where water is close to the exhaust port. If it was a headgasket and water in the cycls it would miss and you didnt say anything about a miss when starting so thats why im guessing the head is rusted thru. Now you can remove the muffler and look down there and just mite see where its coming from. In my yrs of being around those engnes ive seen that happen three times just like you describe.
