TISCO bevelled piston rings

I've been rebuilding a Farmall B.

The TISCO kit has two compression rings per cylinder, the lower one with a bevel on the inside edge. Each ring is marked with an "R", with the bevelled edge on the same side as the mark. There do not appear to be any pips or dots.

Sales rep from Yesterday's Tractors told me "dot mark up, bevel down" which doesn't make a lot of sense to me since the only mark is an "R" and is on the same side as the bevel. Tractor Part Mart wrote me "The bevel on these need to face down." So I guess I'm installing bevel side down, despite some of the advice on this forum. Unless someone wants to tell me the sales reps are wrong?

Found this with Google-COMPRESSION RING INSTALLATION

Ring installation instructions are placed in every set of piston rings Hastings Manufacturing Company produces. These instructions should be read each time before the piston rings are installed on the pistons. Listed below are the general rules for the installation of various types of compression rings.

Rings having a "pip" mark or dot on the side of the ring must always be installed with the "pip" mark or dot towards the top of the piston.

Rings with a bevel on the inside diameter but no "pip" mark or dot must be installed with the bevel towards the top of the piston.

Rings with a groove in the outside diameter and no "pip" mark or dot must be installed with the groove toward the bottom of the piston.

* Rings having no dots, bevels, or grooves can be installed either way.

It is a good idea after installing all rings on the pistons to recheck each ring on each piston for correct installation

Yeah, I saw that too, which is why I'm still not happy with the answers I've received. According to that information, these would be installed (inside diameter) bevel side up. But both the reps I talked to said bevel side down, and the Yesterday's Tractor dealer called TISCO himself...

I would go with what Hastings told me. They make the rings so nobody should know them any better. Tisco is just a sales company. They source the parts and then repackage them. It doesn't suprise me that a Tisco rep doesn't know much about their parts, if they did they probably wouldn't sell some of the junk that they do. When I rebuilt my super A I bought the pistons, sleeves and rings from this site. The rings in mine were Hastings and I followed their directions.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. I can't really be sure these are Hastings rings, there was no documentation of any kind in the kit. But assuming they are, you're saying bevel side up? Just don't want to screw this up and have to tear the thing down again. I feel like there's just no way I can be sure about this.

Rings with an inside bevel are installed bevel up. The bevel is too allow an area for combustion gasses to collect and provide pressure to push the ring tighter against the cylinder wall.

Rings with an outside bevel are installed bevel down. The bevel is designed so that when the pressure pushing down on the ring the rings twists slightly and the lip of the bevel area acts like a scraper to assist in wiping oil off the cylinder wall to aid the oil control ring with oil consumption.

I went over and looked up the rings for a Farmall B on Tisco's site. Looking at the pic they are Hastings rings. Hastings is the only one who makes a 3 piece flex vent oil ring. Look at this page and see if your 3 piece oil ring matches the pic.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm just posting this in case someone else has the same question.

I just got off the phone with Hastings regarding part no 2C7696. They told me the top (shiny) ring can be installed either way while the bottom ring (black) should be installed "dot up, inside bevel DOWN". Now, I'm still a little weirded out by the fact that mine have an "R" and no dots, but I have to go with what the Hastings rep told me. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.
