Cub radiator

I've posted a few times here about a 47 Cub I'm trying to get running again. Got the engine running good - found out today the radiator has about 5 leaks. I know the best route is to recore it but this thing belongs to a rail road museum and money is always tight. We use it to mow grass around the area. Before I ask what they want to do I want to make sure I've covered all the options. I know a recore is between $400-500.Is it worth trying something to plug the leaks. If so what would be recommended - its a thermosiphon system.Last question - if they decided to sell instead of fixing it what might they ask. Other than the radiator its in good shape. Good tires, runs good, hydraulics with one point hitch and a woods mower for the hitch. It was made in 47.
 
Sounds like you *WANT* that tractor. I can practically hear you salivating from here!

There is no way a recore would cost $400-500, and there are other options that are much less expensive.

First one is a good radiator shop should be able to plug the leaks for not much $$$.

Second one is a used radiator. Lots of good used ones out there.

Third one is a new radiator. I got mine for <$100 off ebay.
 
I admit I have considered it. I need it like I need a hole in my head. On the recore I spent $500 on an A radiator so I'm assuming a Cub is a little cheaper but haven't priced it. Problem with a repair is one doesn't know if its repairable until you get to a shop- may not be enough good core to repair. Concerning your new one - any issues with it? I've heard bad things about aftermarket radiators.Maybe a new one on this tractor is the way to go.
 
I cant recall the name of the company I got mine from on ebay, but when I mounted it, the neck was off by like 1/4" but once I got the hose on it was fine. Still had some fitment issues when it came time for the sheet metal, but I was able to work that out. I think it was just the filler neck was off some with the hose on, I really dont recall exactly what it was now.
 
Pinhole leaks can sometimes be plugged with black pepper as a temporary fix. I've seen it last a long time. May not be right for a permanent repair but may be worth a try.
 
How bad are the leaks? Are they gaping holes or weeping holes? If only weeping holes, I would suggest Bars leak. follow the directions, and make sure that the engine / radiator are up to operating temp before you pour the Bars Leak in. Then, let it run for at least 30-60 mins, working it is even a bit better. If they are pin holes, that will work.

I also agree with the others. I just bought a good used cub rad for $90. Heck, if this is truly for a railroad museum, I'll even make a $20 donation to help out.
